MP Barron pushed government to deliver millions in funding for Vancouver Island food bank, Loaves and Fishes

OTTAWA – On Monday, NDP MP Lisa Marie Barron (Nanaimo-Ladysmith) succeeded in pushing the Liberal government to include millions in funding for Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank in the Fall Economic Statement.

"Getting this much needed funding is the result of the dedication and work of the Loaves and Fishes team, their incredible volunteers, and members of the community all pushing for the government to do their part,” said Barron. “People in Nanaimo-Ladysmith and across the Island are struggling to make ends meet, and Loaves and Fishes is doing a huge part in making sure people are not left to go hungry.”

The statement announced $5 million in funding that would be delivered to Loaves and Fishes from 2025 to 2027. MP Barron had been fighting for this funding for more than a year to support the organization's warehouse and food distribution expansion project, allowing the food bank to serve even more people. This funding falls short of the $7 million dollar ask but is a significant win for the project.

“I’m pleased that all three levels of government have finally come to agreement that this funding is a priority,” added Barron. “This federal funding is needed and long overdue.”
